How to Get Diagnosed with Vein Disease

1. Initial Consultation

   A patient’s journey to symptom free and beautiful legs begins with an initial screening. This complimentary screening includes a one hour appointment with one of our skilled ultrasound technologists, a trainer insurance advocate, and of course, our physician, Dr. Jeffrey Sabatino. The purpose of this appointment is to address any questions you may have, develop a care plan specific to you based on your degree of vein disease, and finally to provide any financial information, including insurance contributions for your treatment plan. 

2. Medical History Discussion

   Discussing medical history is crucial during a vein diagnosis. Your medical history provides context for the underlying factors contributing to vein issues. Medical history offers insights into genetic predispositions, past medical conditions, surgeries and medication use, all of which can impact vein health. Certain conditions like deep vein thrombosis, previous injuries or surgeries can increase your risk. Lifestyle factors, such as job requirements and physical activity levels, as well as pregnancies, also play a role.

3. Physical Examination

   A physical examination provides first-hand visual and tactile information about the condition of your veins. Through this examination, we’ll assess the appearance, size and location of veins, identify abnormalities, and gauge the extent of any issues like varicose veins or spider veins. Veins are tested for tenderness, swelling or changes in texture, which provides valuable diagnostic clues. 

4. Diagnosis

   Based on your symptoms and medical history, you’ll receive a diagnosis from our on-staff physician, Dr. Jeffrey Sabatino. At the end of your free, one hour consultation, you will be presented with the most thorough treatment plan for your condition. We offer several methods of treatment depending on your diagnosis.

Utilizing Ultrasound Doppler Imaging

Ultrasound is a widely used diagnostic imaging technique and is highly effective in diagnosing vein diseases by providing detailed and real-time visualization of the veins and blood flow. Our team utilizes this technology when necessary for a proper diagnosis. Ultrasound uses safe sound waves emitted by a transducer placed on the skin. This real-time imaging reveals both healthy and abnormal vein structure, blood flow patterns and valve function. Ultrasound detects conditions like varicose veins, thrombosis and venous reflux.

The Dangers of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition where blood clots form in deep veins, often in the legs. If a clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening complication. DVT is detected through symptoms like leg pain, swelling and redness, but diagnosis is confirmed using tests like ultrasound to visualize blood flow and clot presence. During your appointment, we’ll evaluate your symptoms and discuss how you can avoid the risk of DVT.
